EARTHBOUND SOULS
Earthbound souls are human souls that remain on earth even after the passing away of the body they used to inhabit or in other words continue to live even after their human personalities have passed away. Earthbound souls are those disembodied people who have lost their bodies on earth but still continue to exist/ live in this physical realm. Earthbound souls are ones who after death have not crossed over to their plane of existence. Such souls just hover around the earth plane and after a period of time become entities. Such souls thrive on other people’s energies for their survival.
Somewhere between leaving their body and entering light they have encountered doubt or fear or guilt or over concern of loved ones or revenge, etc and decided to hang around here and finish the unfinished.
These souls exists in a temporary state between worlds midway inhabiting earth as a spirit without the physical body. This leaves the soul confused, angry, frustrated and with very little or no joy at all, just merely surviving or hanging around. These are souls who have resisted the process of transition and evolution.
In olden times it was said that a person’s last wish should be fulfilled, even for convicts who used to be hanged, such a thing used to be permitted. The sole aim of this was that the person to pass away should not get attached to the earth plane and move on to their plane of existence after death. But somewhere due to changing times, hidden and large number of unfulfillment of wishes of a soul, many a soul have chosen not to cross over and hover around here to get their wishes / motive fulfilled.
How it happens
When a person dies, his soul which is attached to the body through a silver cord is freed from its body. Its here the soul becomes a witness and even watches the last rites around its body. Its at this point generally the attachment to the body should cease to exist as the soul needs a body to survive and the very body it inhabited for so many years was no longer available. And here the soul ideally should start its journey upward, although it spends a few days in the places it liked and with the people he loved. The window of moving back to the plane of existence is limited and its called the Bardo. This Bardo closes after a few days of the death of a person believed to be around 12 to 21 days. If the soul does not cross over to light in this time period it gets stuckup here, be it by choice or by missing out, this soul then becomes earthbound, its like missing a train and getting stranded. This soul now if and whenever he wants to go back will have to search out for sources or reach out to people who help release souls, till such time they will be stuck on the earth plane and hence are called earthbound souls. Many a times this time is very long as the soul might even lose motivation in going back home.
Suicide- a spiritual crime
All suicide cases are earthbound and they cannot rise to their astral planes as the bardo never opens up and they are stuckup here. Generally they have to wait till the actual designated date of death arrives according to the soul contract. So, for example, if a person has committed suicide at the age of 35 years and according to his soul contract he had to live for 75 years, this soul will be earthbound for a minimum of 40 years where the window of opportunity to move up opens up. As each soul on this planet covers and carries so much of karma and life lessons not just for himself but for all around him, it becomes a huge karmic debt on him as it disturbs the equilibrium of those who needed to learn through him or were waiting to get helped by him according to the soul contract and so on.
Why souls remain Earthbound?
There are quite a few reasons, we will touch upon some of the most common ones here.
1- Concern for a loved one– One of the most important one noticed nowadays is due to over attachment/ concern of a loved one. These souls feel they will stay near and close to their loved one and take care of them, since they cannot see them sad or feel they will not be able to fight the battle of life alone. These cases have been observed in extreme attachment cases where one cannot leave the other.
2- Traumatic/ sudden death– Majority of times in case of sudden or traumatic ghastly deaths, the souls get stuckup here and don’t go back as they are stunned and cannot think that they are no more, they are in a state of illusion and keep thinking they very much exist here. Although over a period of time they feel and realize but they get accustomed to this way of existence.
3- Fear / shame of facing ancestors– Some souls stay back due to the fear of facing their family members like maybe father or mother or brother who passed away before them and they had real bad relations with them. They fear that they will not be able to face them when they go up and hence they prefer being earthbound here. Such cases can generally happen if this soul has cheated or killed or caused his passed away family member any kind of harm.
4- To help the family / loved one– Many souls stay behind to protect their families and loved ones as they feel they can take care of their family in a better way by being on the earth plane. They fear to leave the family alone and remain back to watch over them. This might also happen if the family or a loved one is going through troubled times.
5- Fear of judgment/ punishment– Such cases are rare but generally happen with over aggressive people who pass away and they know very well that they had caused harm to innocent people for their gains. They know very well that in the life review they will have to take responsibility and they might end up in sufferings. Such souls prefer to stay back here and would avoid anything and everything to go back to their own astral plane.
6- Attachments/ Addictions to earthly pleasures– This might sound strange but quite a few souls are so attached to the pleasures of the earth plane that even after death they hover around the earth plane and enjoy experiencing things, such souls are always on the lookout for people having similar habits and they would invade their aura and live as entities in them and continue to enjoy the pleasures through their body.
7- Exit doors/ bardo is closed and they are left behind– These souls are the confused ones who are in a dilemma to stay back or cross over and in this indecision, the time gets over and the bardo or the exit doors get closed. And they are left behind, till they find a medium to help them back.
8- Guilt-Such cases generally happen in suicide cases although some other souls might also get stuck up due to this. In suicide cases sometimes if a medium spots or helps them, these souls don’t prefer to go back due to guilt as they know now that suicide is the biggest spiritual crime and they are unworthy of moving ahead.
9- Unfinished business-Many souls get stuck up due to some unfinished business here on earth plane, its maybe a project they were working on or say a marriage of his daughter or an occasion or event which they were dearly waiting to attend or a task to fulfill which can also be revenge from people who troubled him or his loved ones, etc. There can be umpteen such reasons for a soul feeling it needs to complete to move on and cross over.
These are some of the reasons for a soul to be earthbound, nevertheless there can be other reasons too for a soul to stay back, it’s a personal decision of the soul and no one questions its approach as the earth is all about free will.
But one thing is that the soul can hear our thoughts and its always advisable to communicate to the soul after it has died to cross over to its plane of existence, because otherwise the soul is in serious trouble if at all it stays back. On our side the loved ones left behind should also remove the attachment with the soul, so that its not held back in love. Every soul has a evolution journey to cover and unnecessary obstacles peg it back.
A very close relative of mine was earthbound for around 2 years, due to her concern for her husband till we found out and released her.
The simple connections
The mathematics is very simple, we are connected to our ancestors in every way of happiness and grief. So, if they are stuckup here as earthbound it will mean we will also get stuckup in our wordly journey somewhere. Hence releasing them benefits not just them, us too, such deep are the ancestral connections.
How to know if a loved one is earthbound?
There are ways in which sometimes you feel your loved one has not gone to light. Sometimes such souls will come regularly in the dreams of loved ones or in some cases a person would be able to feel the presence of his loved one in his house/ room or around him. So, sometimes it can be easy to detect or understand that the soul is left behind. In either cases we detect it and would be able to verify or detect at a nominal amount.
Do the Dead need healing/ prayers/protection?
The dead always need serious healings and prayers for a variety of reasons, the most important one being not to be earthbound, that is stuck up in the earth plane itself. There are many reasons for the soul to be earthbound like unfinished business, excessive grief, trauma on death, sudden death, fear of moving on the astral plane, guilt, one of the most important being improper finishing of rituals, etc. The soul feels it needs a little more time to wait and finish and move. This keeps them hovering in the earth plane itself. But alas, the time is limited. Its very very important that they cross over in the 12 days to their astral plane of existence, moreover as the entry for them to the astral world closes a few days after this.
The soul has to be communicated regularly in these days to move over to its realm of existence and not wait back here. The soul can hear your thoughts and for something coming from a loved , is that the soul cannot deny and moves on.
Earthbound spirits lead a very miserable existence as they are neither in their actual plane nor in a body to lead an earthly life. They may not be negative or harmful but they are stuck up. Hence healings and our prayers are of utmost importance during this period so that the departed soul crosses over to the designated astral plane peacefully. In Hindu religion its said not to visit temples and worship during these 12 days. But prayers are very much necessary by the whole family to help the dead. One more very important aspect to be updated with is the protection of the soul. Like we keep a small pen knife/ nail cutter as protection from evil spirits under the baby’s pillow, we need to protect the dead also to reach its destination- the astral world safe and sound.
My grandmother passed away recently and we kept carnelian and clear quartz crystals with the body alongwith the transition pack of bachflowers, which too helps and protects the soul in its afterlife journey. Later after we collected the ashes on the third day, we kept all three with the ashes in the locker and immersed it in the Ganges on the 11th day with the ashes. So, protection, prayers, healings are all extremely essential in these days to say the least. This is the least we can do for our loved ones, who gave all they could in our lifetimes.

2- Do the last rites properly, don’t bargain with the pandit, don’t cut short or escape any part of the rituals
3- Communicate to the passed away soul to cross over to light and not hang around here for any reason. Its there around and can hear your thoughts very clearly.
